Final Stats
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Penn men's tennis team posted a slim 4-3 victory over Navy Friday evening at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Quakers won their fourth consecutive match to start to the season, while the Mids saw their mark fall to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
"We played a very good Penn team right down to the wire," said Navy head coach John Officer. "I am very proud of the way we competed. This shows what type of team we are capable of becoming."
After the Quakers won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, Penn took a 2-0 lead over Navy as Jason Lin posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Jeremy New (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) at No. 4 singles. The lead for the Quakers then was expanded to 3-0 when Jason Magnes won a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Zach Nicholson (So., Bowie, Md.) at No. 5 singles.
The first point of the match for the Mids was recorded at No. 1 singles when Owen Bullard (Jr., Concord, N.C.) posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Eugen Brazdil. Navy climbed to within 3-2 of the Quakers after Marcus Rebersak (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory against Adam Schwartz at No. 2 singles.
The No. 3 singles match between Navy's Anderson Walls (Fr., Alpharetta, Ga.) and Penn's Phil Law would have tiebreakers decide what would turn out to be both sets of the match. Law won both breakers by identical scores of 7-5 to clinch the victory for the Quakers.
The final match of the day saw Navy's Nicholas Gutsche record a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Mark Milbrandt at No. 6 singles.
"This was a really good showing for the young team that we are against a program that has been nationally ranked and has won a pair of recent Ivy League titles," said Officer. "Nick Gutsche could be considered as our player of the day for how he stepped in tonight. Also, both Owen and Marcus beat guys who were highly nationally ranked as juniors. This wasn't a win, but it was a very impressive performance for us."
Navy will be back on the courts Saturday when the Mids play host to Yale (12 Noon) and Delaware State (5 p.m.).
