ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Howard won the three doubles matches by tight scores, then used its momentum to sweep all six singles matches, dealing the Navy women's tennis team its first loss of the season, 7-0, on Thursday evening at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex. The loss drops Navy's record to 3-1 overall in its first varsity season.

"We lost to a very solid Howard team today. They were able to do what we had done in our previous matches, get the doubles point and use the momentum gained to start off the singles quickly," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "In some cases we were able to make a comeback but it was too big of a hole to climb out of."

Navy lost its three doubles matches by narrow margins, the closest coming at No. 3. Julie Dias and Lindsay Olsen dropped a tight 8-6 decision to Michelle Gee and Anne Ahkimien. At No. 2 doubles, Brittney Boucher and Stefanie Ton fell 8-5 to Michelle Brown and Ashley Moore. At No.1, Emani Decquir and Dye Das suffered an 8-4 loss to Alyssa Works and Brittney Morgan.

Navy then dropped all six singles matches, with two of the losses coming in three sets. Decquir fell to Brown in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), snapping her win streak at four matches. At No. 3 singles, Ton fell to Ashley Moore, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Dye Das (6-4, 6-2) lost a close match at No. 4 singles, and Olsen had a strong first set in a 6-4, 6-0, loss to Ahkimien at No. 6 singles.

"It was a little bit frustrating today. In all of the matches the score does not truly indicate the how tight the match was," said Puryear. "Today it really boiled down to us not being able to take advantage of opportunities we had created during critical times in each of the matches. We had chances but did not do a good job of capitalizing on them."

Navy will close out its week of play with a Saturday morning match against Rider at 11:00, then will face Seton Hall on Sunday, also at 11:00 am.

"Overall I think it was a good learning experience for us. You can learn much from your loses and we need to use this match to evaluate exactly where we are as a team, and to continue the progress we have been making with each match," said Puryear.
