ANNAPOLIS. Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team won three singles matches, but lost the pivotal doubles point in dropping a 4-3 decision to Big East Conference member Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Navy's overall record to 3-2. Seton Hall evens its record at 3-3.
"I thought we did a good job of fighting back in singles play after losing the doubles point," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "This was a tough one to lose though, but I am confident that we will learn what is needed to do to come through in these types of close matches."
Navy lost all three doubles matches, the closest being at No. 1 doubles, where Emani Decquir and Dye Das dropped an 8-5 decision to Denise Liebschner and Belfin Sunbul.
The Midshipmen, however, recovered in singles play, winning at Nos. 2, 3 and 6 singles. However, with the order of finish being 5, 4, 1, 2, 6, 3, Seton Hall had already clinched the match by the time Navy won a singles match.
Brittney Boucher improved to 4-1 during the spring by defeating Elizabeth Verow, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles. Freshman Stefanie Ton continued her strong campaign at No. 3 singles, topping Sunbul, 6-3, 7-5, to improve to 4-1 in the dual-meet season and 6-5 overall. Lastly, Lindsay Olsen won a three-set match against Slavina Klapansky, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
"I liked the way the girls came together as a team and must commend the efforts of Bocuher, Ton and Olsen in singles play," said Puryear.
Navy will host Morgan State next Saturday at 5:00 pm, then will host Towson at 5:00 pm on Sunday.
