Navy Men's Swimming Tops Columbia, 158-131

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's swimming & diving team closed out the regular season in fine fashion, topping visiting Columbia, 158-131 in dual-meet action on Friday afternoon in Lejeune Hall.

With the victory, the Midshipmen conclude the regular season with a stellar 13-1 record.

"I'm happy with how the guys raced," said Navy head swimming coach Bill Roberts. "When the championships are in front of you, you always look close at the last dual race as a gauge. From a technical standpoint, I thought the guys did a good job of executing what we had been working on."

Columbia would open the meet by nipping Navy's 200 medley relay foursome by just six-tenths of a second in a meet-opening victory (1:44.84 to 1:44.90).

The Mids, however, would respond in a resounding fashion by finishing 1-2-3 in each of the next three events (800 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke) to pull in front of the visiting Lions and break open the meet.

"We knew that Columbia had a 200 medley relay," added Roberts. "We had to have a big lead on them to win that relay because they have a great anchor (Adam Powell) that was able to catch us. I'm satisfied with how the guys were able to respond to the relay result quickly."

Led by four multi-event winners, Navy produced the top performances in 12 of the 16 events contested on the afternoon.

Adam Meyer (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) won both the 200 butterfly (2:01.66) and 200 breaststroke events (2:19.94), while also recording the top time in the 200 IM (2:03.17) in an exhibition swim.

Mac Anthony (So., Allentown, Pa.) was the first to touch in both the 100 (51.31)and 200 freestyle events (1:52.37), Erik Hunter (Jr., Placerville, Calif.) swam to victories in the 400 (4:01.10) and 800 freestyle (8:16.97) and Mark Meyer (So., Bethesda, Md.) produced the race's top times in the 100 backstroke (58.24) and 100 butterfly (56.81) as an exhibition swimmer.

Other event winners for the Mids included Andrew Utama (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.58), as well as Ben Nicholas (So., Bothell, Wash.) in the three-meter dive (339.15) and K.C. Linn (So., Newhall, Calif.), Danny Quinn (Fr., Queenstown, Md.), J.J. Helms (Jr., Conroe, Texas) and Andrew Blazuk (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) in the 400 freestyle relay (3:30.22).

The Navy men will return to action in two weekends from now on Feb. 18-20 at the Patriot League Championship, which will be contested in Annapolis.
