Long Tabbed League Pitcher of the Week

March 29, 2010

• Watch Long's performance vs. UMBC last Saturday

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For tossing a shutout on Saturday, Navy baseball southpaw Sam Long (Jr./Newnan, Ga.) was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

Long recorded his first-career shutout against UMBC and the first for any Navy pitcher in two years, as he scattered three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. He faced only three batters over the minimum and needed just 82 pitches to get through his seven innings of work. Among the three runners to reach base during the afternoon, none of them were able to get past second base.

For the year, Long is 3-1 with a 3.37 ERA in 34.2 innings with only six walks, two of which have occurred in the last-31.0 innings, and 42 strikeouts. He has allowed the opposition to hit a mere .239 (32-for-134).

Long earned pitcher-of-the-week honors for the second time this season and the third time in his career. A Navy pitcher has been recognized as Patriot League Pitcher of the Week in three of the six weeks this year, as Wes Olson (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) claimed the award in the first week of the spring.

The Midshipmen (17-7) will return to action this Wednesday at 6 p.m., when they head to Shipley Field to take on Maryland. Live stats will be available via GameTracker on www.NavySports.com(.)
