Mids Place Second in Adams Cup Race

April 24, 2010

BOSTON - The Navy men's heavyweight crew team was edged by less than two seconds to finish second out of three teams in the Adams Cup race on the Charles River on Saturday morning.

In the Adams Cup race, which is presented to the winner of the first varsity event between Navy, Harvard and Penn, host Harvard finished with a time of 5:57.25, only 1.98 seconds faster than Navy's 5:59.23 showing. The Midshipmen were more than 10 seconds ahead of Penn's 6:09.51 clocking.

"There was some really good racing today," stated Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "We were able to lead during part of the race and never caved in. It was the closest we have rowed with Harvard, who is ranked fourth nationally, in quite some time. A number of our varsity rowers grew up today. They raced a big-time race."

The Midshipmen defeated Penn and finished behind Harvard in three other events on Saturday - the second varsity, third varsity and first freshmen races.

Navy was able to come away with a victory in the second freshmen contest, as its time of 6:07.4 was 8.1 seconds better than Penn's second-place 6:15.5 performance.

The Midshipmen (4-3) will return to action on Saturday, May 1, when they head up to Princeton, N.J., to take on Columbia.
