PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Navy men's heavyweight crew team was edged by just over three seconds to fall to Columbia in the Maxwell Stevenson Race at Princeton on Sunday morning.
In the Maxwell Stevenson Race, which is presented to the winner of the first varsity event between Navy and Columbia, Columbia finished with a time of 5:36.50, just 3.40 seconds faster than Navy's 5:39.90 showing.
The win was Columbia's third straight in the event, but Navy still holds the all-time series lead at 21-5.
The Midshipmen held down the top two spots in the Freshmen / Novice 8 race, winning in 5:45.50 and placing second in 5:48.50. Columbia was third in 5:49.40.
Columbia defeated the Midshipmen by almost 10 seconds in the Second Varsity 8 race, 5:44.20 to 5:54.10. A second Navy team finished third in 5:57.20.
Navy will compete again in two weeks at the Eastern Sprints Championship on Sunday, May 16, in Worcester, Mass.
