Mids Win Eight Flights at Navy Tennis Invite

Sept. 12, 2010

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team completed play at the Navy Invitational by winning eight of 10 matches from Temple Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The results of the day gave the Mids the individual flight title in eight of the 11 flights being contested this weekend.

"I'm a perfectionist and I can find fault in a lot of things, but I saw zero faults with our performance today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Everyone played really well against a very good Temple team. The matches we did lose had a lot to do with really good players for Temple."

Navy began the third and final day of play at the invite by winning three of the four doubles matches from Temple. Navy's No. 2 team of Nick Birger (Sr., Belleville, Ill.) and Mike Eisenberg (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) won a 9-7 decision over Taylor Hairston and Kacper Rams, Jeremy New (Sr., Glen Allen, Va.) and Marcus Rebersak (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Mansur Gishkaev and Andrey Morozov, and Eddie Konrad (Jr., The Woodlands, Texas) and Zach Nicholson (Jr., Bowie, Md.) combined for an 8-1 victory over Kurt Mauro and Luv Sodha at No. 4 doubles.

Four of Navy's five singles wins on the day were recorded in straight sets. Giving up the fewest number of games was Konrad, who won a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Mauro at No. 7 singles. Nicholas Gutsche (So., Sarasota, Fla.) surrendered just five games in tallying a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hairston at No. 5 singles, with Rebersak dropping only six games in posting a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles over Gishkaev. Navy's last straight-set winner on the day was New, who gave up only seven games in his 6-4, 6-3 win over Morozov at No. 3 singles.

Rounding out the list of Navy's singles winners was Nicholson, who recorded a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Dmitry Vizhunov at No. 4 singles.

"It has been some time since we won this many flights at our own tournament," said Officer. "I couldn't be happier with how we played this weekend. Our fitness level also was very high. I thought we not only looked like a championship team, but I think we played better this weekend than we did at the end of last season. One of our goals this year to get into the national rankings, and performances like this will get us there."

Winning doubles flights for Navy were the teams of New and Rebersak at No. 3 and Konrad and Nicholson at No. 4. Singles flight winners for Navy featured Rebersak (No. 2), New (No. 3), Nicholson (No. 4), Gutsche (No. 5), Matt Richmond (So., Kalamazoo, Mich.) (No. 6) and Konrad (No. 7).

Rebersak and New not only won all three of their matches as a doubles team, they also posted a 3-0 record in their respective singles flight this weekend.

"I'd say Marcus was our player of the weekend," said Officer. "He has worked really hard and I was very pleased with how he played this weekend."

Navy will have nearly one month off before playing host to another three-day invitational against George Washington, Georgetown and UMBC.
