Men's Cross Country Hosts Navy Invitational on Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's cross country team will host the Navy Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 18) at the cross country course USNA Golf Club. Saturday's men's varsity race will begin at 11 a.m. while the JV meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. Parking for Saturday's race will be available off Greenbury Point Rd. at the golf course. There will be attendants on hand directing spectator parking.

About the Navy Invitational
The teams joining the Mids in this year's invite include: Louisville, Johns Hopkins, UMBC, Mt. St. Mary's, George Washington, Maryland, Malone, American and Elizabethtown. In the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional polls released on Monday, American is ranked No. 5 and Maryland is No. 9 in the Mid-Atlantic region, while Louisville is slotted at No. 6 in the Southeast region Navy is currently ranked No. 4 in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Recapping the Harry Groves Invitational
In a meet that featured five teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic regional poll, the Midshipmen ran to a third-place finish on Saturday (Sept. 11) in University Park, Pa. The Mids finished with 79 points, behind Princeton (45) and Georgetown (52).

Senior Andrew Hanko led all Navy finishers as he took second place with a time of 25:18. Cody Rome, who led for part of the race, finished in sixth place with a time of 25:30.

Rounding out Navy's top-five were James Person in 14th place (25:54), Jeremy Haney in 31st (26:18) and Kyle Satterwhite in 34th (26:28).

Quoting the Coach
Navy head coach Al Cantello on this weekend's Navy Invitational...
"If you read the pedigree on the winner of last week's race (Donn Cabral of Princeton), who Hanko took second to, it would take a half hour. American, Maryland and Louisville are all ranked - our philosophy is `there shall be no cupcakes.'"

Hanko Named Patriot League Runner of the Week
Captain Andrew Hanko was named Patriot League Runner of the Week by the conference office on Monday .The honor is Hanko's first of the season and sixth of his career - the most by any runner in the Patriot League since the conference began handing out the award in 2000.

Competing against some of the best runners in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic region at Saturday's Harry Groves Spike Shoe Invitational, Hanko took second place, overall, in a field of 193 runners with a time of 25:18.5.

Navy and the USTFCCA Poll
The Mids are ranked fourth in the most recent USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic region poll that was released on Monday as they sit behind Villanova, Princeton and Georgetown, respectively. The Mids have the highest ranking of any Patriot League school.

Preseason Pundits
The two-time defending Patriot League champion Navy Midshipmen were selected by the league's coaches and sports information directors to repeat as champions again in 2010. The Midshipmen received 13 of 16 first-place votes in the poll; American was slotted second with three first-place votes.
