Navy Women's Tennis Falls to Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's tennis team defeated Navy in all three doubles matches and then swept Navy in all six singles matches to hand the Midshipmen their second loss of the season, 7-0.

The loss drops Navy to 1-2 overall, while Maryland, playing in its season opener, improved to 1-0.

"Maryland is a up and coming team, in arguably the toughest conference in the country. As a coach I am never satisfied with a loss, but I think we showed improvement from our matches of last weekend," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "The scores do not tell the total story of the match. I liked the progress of our doubles play. We were aggressive and did a good job of controlling play and taking charge of the net. However we must do a better job of execution, particularly on critical points. In singles play, we were in every point and in general did a lot of things right."

Navy won four games in doubles play, dropping two of the matches by 8-2 scores and one match by an 8-0 tally. The Mids lost the six singles matches in straight sets. Freshman Darien Sears (Silver Spring, Md.) had the most success in singles play, dropping her two sets by identical 6-3 scores. Freshman Erin Snook (Tampa, Fla.) won four games in the first set, dropping her match 6-4, 6-0.

"Ale (Pedergnana) and I ask the players to look at each match objectively, regardless of whether they have won or loss and we do the same. We still like the progress the team is making thus far and we are looking forward to challenge presented by this weekend's matches," said Puryear.

Navy returns home on Friday to face Syracuse, beginning at 1:00 pm at the Brigade Sports Complex.
