Navy Drops Volleyball Match to Lehigh

Oct. 14, 2011

Final Stats

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Lehigh posted 37 kills and a .216 attack percentage in recording a 25-22, 25-12, 25-13 victory over the Navy volleyball team Friday night at Grace Hall in Bethlehem, Pa.

The opening set featured the score being tied 11 times and neither team able to build any kind of significant cushion over the other. Navy (6-15, 1-5 Patriot League) held a slim 18-16 lead when Lehigh (12-7, 4-2) scored the next six points to take a 22-18 advantage. The Mids promptly climbed back to within one point of the Mountain Hawks when a block by Erin Fortner (So., Villa Hills, Ky.) made the score 23-22. A Lehigh kill would end the next point, then a Navy attack error closed out the opening set.

Lehigh quickly took control of the second set as it scored nine of the first 12 points of the frame. The Mountain Hawks would hold a lead of at least five points over the remainder of the set.

Lehigh again had a strong start to the third set. The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Navy sliced into the deficit by closing to within three points at 9-6. That mini run by the Mids was followed by a 6-0 spurt by the Mountain Hawks that gave them a commanding 15-6 lead.

"I didn't do a good job with matchups during the match," said Navy head coach Larry Bock. "We were too reactive to what Lehigh was doing. I didn't anticipate things real well, and that caused the difficulty for us. We also were too aggressive with some of our passing, and all of that combined led to our offensive struggles. When we did pass well, we had good opportunities and balance on offense."

While Lehigh's offense was tallying its 37 kills and .216 attack percentage, its defense was holding Navy to 27 kills and a .074 attack percentage.

Individually for Navy, Caroline Jacobs (So., Arnold, Md.), Maida Kalic' (Sr., Vernon, N.Y.) and Carolyn Ewert (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) all posted five kills on the night. Defensively for the Mids, Holly Berger (Sr., Claremont, Calif.) hauled in 14 digs.

Lehigh's Taylor Poole led all players in the match with nine kills.

Navy will remain in the Lehigh Valley overnight for a match Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lafayette.
