BEALLSVILLE, Md. -- Anchored by rookie August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.), the Navy golf team stands 11th after 36 holes of action at the 27th Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate played at The Members Club at Four Streams Monday in Beallsville, Md.
The Mids were in a three-way tie for sixth place after the opening 18 holes, shooting a 20-over par 304. However, Navy had a difficult time managing the course in the afternoon and slid to 11th with a 36-hole score of 48-over par 616 (304-312). The Mids trail 10th-place Towson (315-300) by one stroke, while leading 12th-place Saint Joseph's (307-315) by six strokes.
West Florida holds a narrow one-stroke advantage over the host Georgetown Hoyas with a 19-over par 587. Georgetown put together a two-round 20-over par 588, while Michigan State stands third with a 21-over par 589. Meanwhile, Campbell's Vaita Guillaume is one of two players in the tournament who is under par after 36 holes. Guillaume finished the day with a 3-under par 139 thanks to his second-round 67.
"Four Streams Golf Course is a very challenging, championship golf course, and the entire 12-team field is strong, so course management skills are at a premium in this event," said Navy head coach Pat. Owen. "The greens are much larger and faster than anything we practice on, and it sometimes takes a couple of rounds to adjust to the speed and slope. We feel confident that the guys will assess their performance today, and rebound with a strong showing on Tuesday."
Jonas is pacing the Midshipmen in 32nd place with a two-round mark of 11-over par 153. Jonas, along with team captain Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), recorded the Mids' low round of the day in the opening round with a 4-over par 75. The Navy rookie, who also is atop the Mids leader board in stroke average this fall, produced a 7-over par 78 over the second 18 holes.
Two strokes behind Jonas in 40th is senior Tyler Kuhn (Louisville, Ky.) who scored a two-round 155. Kuhn opened up with a 6-over par 77 and paired that with his second-round mark of 78. Meanwhile sophomore Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) is in 45th with a 14-over par 156.
Shield opened the tournament with a 4-over par 75, but struggled the most among the Navy lineup in the afternoon round. He turned in an 11-over par 82 to slide from 19th to 50th in the standings. Meanwhile, sophomore David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) experienced almost the exact opposite of Shield. Hall opened the day with a 10-over par 81, but fought his way back with a 6-over par 77 over the second 18 holes. Hall stands 53rd with a 16-over par 158
Action resumes Tuesday morning with the conclusion of the Georgetown Intercollegiate.
