BEDMINSTER, N.J. -- Playing in its final competition of the fall season, the Navy golf team turned in a 32-over par 320 in the final round of the 2011 Service Academy Classic to mount a comeback and place second in the 54-hole tournament. The Mids (313-317-320 = 950) finished 12 strokes behind defending champion Air Force who put together a three-round mark of 74-over par 938 (304-319-315). Meanwhile, Army, who led Navy by three strokes heading into the final round, dropped to third after scoring a 48-over par 336 in the final round to finish 99-over (318-309-336 = 963).

Air Force sophomore Kyle Westmoreland extended his advantage on the links Tuesday by posting a 5-over par 77 in what was the second-lowest score of the day. He took medalist honors by way of his 11-over par 227, bettering his teammate, Robert Belz's score of 16-over par 232.

"We had a fantastic experience this week at the Trump National Golf Club and I want to extend a special thank you from myself, our team and the Naval Academy for hosting an exceptional event," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "I was proud of how we bounced back today and while we came up short in winning the event, we were able to move up to second in the standings. It's easily one of the most difficult courses we've seen all year and the wind conditions made the course even tougher today which you can see from the final round scores. At the end of the day, however, every one of our guys kept a positive attitude and gave their best effort."

Leading the way for the Midshipmen was senior captain Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), who recorded the low round by any golfer on the afternoon. He turned in a 4-over par 76 to finish the two-day tournament with a 20-over par 236 to place fouth. Fellow senior Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) secured a top-five finish with a 7-over par 79 in the final round to give him a 54-hole score of 239 (+23).

Sophomore David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) slipped from fourth to seventh in the final standings after stumbling in Tuesday's final round. The 2011 Patriot League Rookie of the Year posted a 15-over par 87 to finish 24 strokes over (240).

Senior Tyler Kuhn (Louisville, Ky.) finished just outside of the top 10 with a 30-over par 246, while August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) placed 13th and 14th respectively with a 31-over par 247 and a 33-over par 249.
