Mids Win Six Titles at Navy Gold Invite

Oct. 9, 2011

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Members of the Navy men's tennis team combined to win six flight titles at the Navy Gold Invitational that concluded play Sunday afternoon in Annapolis. The Mids closed out the third and final day of the invite by winning six matches against Georgetown at the USNA Tennis Courts.

"I am very proud of our guys," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We played well in doubles, but then fell behind at the start of most of the singles matches. We were able to battle back in the second set and force a number of third sets and win a couple of them."

The Mids began the day by winning a trio of doubles matches against the Hoyas. Navy's No. 2 team of Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) had the lone match that did not go down to the wire as they posted an 8-1 win over Andrew Dottino and Shane Korber.

Each of the other three matches all finished with the identical score of 8-6. Navy's Heyward Drayton (So., Valley Forge, Pa.) and Chris Kenney (So., Westlake Village, Calif.) defeated Casey Distaso and Alex Tropiano at No. 3, while Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) topped John Brosens and Brian Ward at No. 4. Georgetown's doubles win came at the No. 1 flight where Andrew Bruhn and Charlie Caris recorded a victory over Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Anderson Walls (Jr., Alpharetta, Ga.).

In singles, Rebersak, McDonald and Daniel all came away with victories for the Mids. Rebersak won a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) decision over Bruhn at the No. 1 flight, McDonald tallied a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) win over Caris at No. 2 singles and Daniel recorded a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Distaso at No. 5. Daniel won the match after trailing 4-0 in the second set.

Georgetown came away with victories at the remaining singles flights. Korber defeated Mark in three sets at No. 3, Dottino won a straight-set match over Tyler Burnett (Fr., Fayetteville, Ga.) at No. 4, Tropiano won in straight sets against Gutsche at No. 6, Ward won a straight-set match over Matt Richmond (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) at No. 7 and Brosens needed two sets to defeat Kenney at No. 8

"We showed a lot of character out there with bouncing back after losing so many first sets in singles," said Officer. "This is a hard working team and we are getting better. Our depth needs to improve, though. I think that should be one of our strengths."

Winning flight titles in doubles this weekend for Navy were its No. 2 team of Mark and McDonald, its No. 3 tandem of Drayton and Kenney and its No. 4 duo of Daniel and Gutsche. Mids who won singles flights were McDonald at No. 2, Mark at No. 3 and Daniel at No. 5.

Select members of the program will next compete at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship October 20-24 in Charlottesville, Va.
