ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team opened its 2011-12 season on Friday by dealing Fordham and Bard 9-0 losses on the opening day of the Navy Squash Invitational play at the Halsey Field House Squash Courts in Annapolis. Ranked 15th in the College Squash Association Preseason Poll, no Midshipman lost a game en route to Friday's sweeps.
"We got the season off to a successful start," said 12th-year head coach Craig Dawson. "All of our players looked sharp and they all played well. I think everyone was excited to have the opportunity to play outside competition."
Among Navy's nine-man ladder, four freshmen kicked off their collegiate careers with victories, including Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) who sits atop the ladder as the Mids' No. 1 player. McGuinness knocked off Fordham senior Andriy Kulak, 11-2, 11-4, 11-3, but sat out the nightcap against Bard.
Fellow rookie Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) occupies the No. 2 slot for the Mids, scoring an 11-5, 11-3, 11-5 triumph over Fordham's Andrew Grosner. He, too, took the evening match off in preparation for Navy's three-match slate on Saturday.
Playing the No. 4 position, Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) turned in an 11-0, 11-4, 11-3 win over Fordham senior Chris Souther and dealt Bard's Andy Hoffman-Patalona an 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 loss at the No. 2 slot. Meanwhile newcomer John Hsu officially scored his first-career win by default over Fordham, but followed up with an 11-2, 11-1, 11-3 victory over Bard's David Goukin at the No. 7 position.
Junior Hunter Bouchard (Greenvile, Del.) recorded an 11-2, 11-1, 11-3 win over Ray Chen of Fordham at the No. 3 position before moving up to the No. 1 slot against Bard where he dispensed an 11-1, 11-2, 1--1 loss to Dylan Coburn.
Senior team captain John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) also walked away from Friday's opener with a pair of wins. He took down Alex Williams of Fordham, 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 and posted an 11-4, 11-2, 11-0 victory over Bard senior Youseung Kim.
After bowing out of the Barb Tournament a handful of weeks ago with an injury, junior Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) returned to the court looking back to form. He picked up an 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 win over Fordham's No. 6 player Ethan Brooks and completed the day by nearly shutting out Fordham's Houston Stebbins, 11-0, 11-0, 11-1.
Junior David Koenig (Cincinnati, Ohio) occupied the No. 7 slot against Fordham, posting an 11-3, 11-1, 11-1 victory over Matt Traceai before holding Bard's James Spreuwenberg-Steward without a point in a three-point win.
Scoring a win by default in the opener against Fordham, Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) hit the court against Bard where he earned an 11-1, 11-0, 11-1 win over David Goukin.
Navy will take on Johns Hopkins (9:00 am), Drexel (11:00 am) and Bucknell (3:00 pm) on Saturday and will conclude the invite with a match against Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday at 11:00 am.
