ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team continued to roll on the second day of the Navy Squash Invitational where the Mids picked up 9-0 wins over Johns Hopkins and Bucknell and took down Drexel, 8-1. Navy is now 5-0 in what has been a successful opening weekend.
Navy utilized 10 different players in its three matches, as seven of the 10 players put together 3-0 marks on the afternoon. Leading the way for the Mids was rookie Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) who improved scored 3-0 wins over each of his competitors, including Drexel freshman Sebastian Dangond Gala, whom he defeated 11-8, 11-9, 11-9.
Fellow rookie John Hsu (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) also turned in a 3-0 mark, kicking off the day with an 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 win over Johns Hopkins freshman Aditya Mithal.
Seeing his first action of the weekend was junior John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) who picked up three wins, including an 11-9, 11-2, 11-5 win over Johns Hopkins' Anthony Carbone at the No. 8 slot. Playing the No. 9 position in that match was junior Cotter Walker (Orlando, Fla.) who also saw his first action as a member of the varsity unit. Walker scored an 11-1, 11-4, 11-1 victory over Blue Jays junior James Melvin.
Also picking up three wins on the afternoon were senior captain John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.), junior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.), sophomore Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and freshman Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.).
Meanwhile, No. 1 player Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) suffered his first loss of the season. After posting an 11-6, 11-3, 11-1 win over Johns Hopkins' Michael Hur, he was tripped up by Drexel sophomore Justin Singh. McGuinness jumped out to a 1-0 victory by way of an 11-9 win, but dropped three-straight games, including a pair of 11-9 decisions in games two and three to lose the match. He regrouped and came back to defeat Bucknell freshman Hayden Radovich in three.
The Mids will close out action at the Navy Squash Invitational on Sunday where they will face Washington University (Mo.) at Halsey Field House beginning at 11:00 am.
