ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team dropped a pair of 5-4 decisions to 10th-ranked Williams and 14th-ranked Middlebury on Saturday on the campus of Williams College. After opening the season 12-0, the Mids have dropped three in a row.
"We had two tough losses today, but I am proud of the effort that we gave," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "I'm encouraged with the fight that we play with and some of these tight matches are going to begin to turn our way. I was especially happy with how the freshmen have been able to contribute to this team."
In its opening match of the day, Navy battled the host Williams Ephs in what turned out to be a classic in what game down to the final match of the afternoon. Each team had scored four wins apiece and it came down to Williams senior William Morris versus Navy rookie Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) to decide the outcome of the match. McGuinness drew first with an 11-7 victory, however Morris was able to turn the momentum his way via a 13-11 game two win. That spun into wins in the next two games, 11-5 and 11-6, to take the match against McGuinnes and lead Williams to a 5-4 victory over the Mids.
The Mids also fell short in their match against Middlebury in what was the inaugural meeting between the two programs. Although it was the same score as the morning match, it was sewn up prior to the No. 1 matchup. In the Middlebury contest, however, McGuinness bounced back and earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over one of the nation's top players, senior Valentin Quan. Quan took the first two games before McGuinness mounted a comeback in the third game, winning 11-7. McGuinness evened the match at 2-2 when he picked up an 11-8 win in the fourth. He took the match in the fifth by way of an 11-9 victory.
Three players produced wins in both of their matches for the Mids on Saturday, including a pair of Plebes. Rookie Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), who played the No. 3 slot, earned a spectacular win over Williams' Nicholas Marks. After the two split the first four games, Kacergis was faced with a 9-5 deficit in the fifth and deciding game. He did a fine job of regrouping and capturing the match win by taking the fifth game, 11-9. Additionally, he posted a 3-0 sweep over Middlebury sophomore Parker Hurst.
Freshman Hunter Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) has bounced back from a concussion he suffered during the summer months to find his place among the Mids' ladder. Abrams put together a pair of 3-0 victories as Navy's No. 9 player. In the morning session he posted an 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 win over Williams' Aaron Seong and came back to post an 11-6, 11-2, 11-7 victory over Middlebury's Reed Palmer.
Meanwhile, Abrams' older brother, Billy, a junior, also put together a 2-0 record on the day. He opened the day with a 3-2 win over Williams' Jared Zuckerman in what was a see-saw affair. The two traded wins until Abrams was finally able to put the match away in the fifth with an 11-9 win. Meanwhile, Middlebury's Robert Galluccio was little challenge for Abrams, as Abrams picked up an 11-4, 11-4, 11-9 win.
Joining McGuinness in splitting his two matches was freshman Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.), who turned in a 3-1 win over Williams sophomore Taylor Foehl. Berry won the opener, 12-10, before Foehl evened the match with an 11-8 game two win. Berry dealt Foehl an 11-6 loss in the third and sewed up the victory thanks to a 13-11 win in the fourth.
