PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Penn recorded wins in each of the doubles matches and tallied four three-set singles victories to post a 7-0 win over the Navy men's tennis team Wednesday evening at Levy Pavilion in Philadelphia.
After the Quakers won each of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, Penn gained its second team point when Hicham Laalej won a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Owen Bullard (Sr., Concord, N.C.) at No. 1 singles. The margin soon became 3-0 as Nikola Kocovic posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jeremy New (Sr., Glen Allen, Va.) at No. 4 singles.
Each of the remaining matches would be extended into a third set.
The first such match saw Ivan Turudic win a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 contest over Marcus Rebersak (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) at No. 2 singles. Phil Law followed by posting a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles over Zach Nicholson (Jr., Bowie, Md.). Soon Jason Lin recorded a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Nicholas Gutsche (So., Sarasota, Fla.) at No. 5 singles. With the team portion of the match already decided, Penn's Jason Magnes and Navy's Matt Richmond (So., Kalamazoo, Mich.) played a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a complete third set. Magnes would defeat Richmond by the score of 10-4 to end play on the day.
"I was pleased with today's matches in a lot of ways," said Navy head coach John Officer. "It had been a tough week for us. We were not really competitive in either of our matches Saturday at UNC Greensboro or Sunday at No. 75 William & Mary. But we came back today against a team that is on the same level as Greensboro is and had four three-set matches. This puts us back on the map in terms of where we need to be playing at. It was not a win today and that is disappointing, but it was a close match against a quality opponent that we had our chances in."
Navy will play Saturday at Old Dominion before playing host to Loyola (Noon) and Morgan State (5 p.m.) Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
