NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion (12-2) men's tennis team came out the victors in four three-set matches in a 7-0 win over Navy on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. With the loss, Navy falls to 7-5 after starting the season 7-1.
"We fought hard today against a very good team," said head coach John Officer. "With a little better play we could have pulled it out, but we have to execute better down the stretch."
Just three days after suffering four three-set singles losses against Penn, Navy was once again on the short side of the three-setters.
Junior Marcus Rebersak (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fell to Benjamin Chomette at No. 2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 and senior Jeremy New (Glen Allen, Va.) was defeated by Krzysztof Muzalewski, 4-6, 6-4 (10-3) at No. 3.
Additionally, sophomore Matt Richmond (Kalamazoo, Mich.) dropped a three-setter to Fahoum Fahoum at No. 5, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and sophomore Anderson Walls (Alpharetta, Ga.) lost to Alfredo Rodriguez at No. 6, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
New and freshman Heyward Drayton (Valley Forge, Pa.) teamed up to earn an 8-6 win over Albert Ochagavia and Rodriguez at No. 3 doubles, but the Monarch's won at No. 1 and No. 2 to secure the doubles point.
"We have been playing good teams and have been battling hard and I'm looking forward to our two matches tomorrow," said Officer.
Navy will host Loyola (noon) and Morgan State (5 p.m.) on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
