HOLLYWOOD, S.C. - After 36 holes of play, the Navy golf team stands 15th among 15 teams at the 2011 Charleston Shootout played Monday at the Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C. The Mids put together a 44-over par 620 through two rounds, 11 strokes behind 14th-place Western Kentucky and 48 strokes behind tournament leader Baylor.
The Mids opened the day with a 17-over par 305 and were tied with Presbyterian for 13th place. However, the second round was not as kind to Navy, slipping 10 strokes and into last place.
Junior Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) is in a five-way tie for 14th on the leader board, putting together a strong performance in the Mids' first tournament of the spring season. Reilly was even after the first round and followed up with a 1-over par 73 in the afternoon to post a 1-over par 145.
Just four strokes behind Reilly is team captain Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.), who stands tied for 30 with a 5-over par 149. Hayes scored a 2-over par 74 over the first 18 holes before closing out the day with a 3-over par 75 in the final round.
Third-year standout Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) put forth a solid effort in the opening round with a 6-over par 78, but the bottom fell out in the second round where he shot a 13-over par 85. Shield sits in 70th with a 19-over par 163.
Meanwhile freshman David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) and junior Andrew Haines (Kirtland, Ohio) sit in 73rd and 74th-place, respectively. Hall turned in a 22-over par 166, while Haines is 23-over with a 167.
Campbell's Vaita Guillaume is blistering the field with a 9-under par 135 which was highlighted by a 12-under par 64 in the opening round. He leads second-place Jacobo Pastor of Charleston Southern by five strokes.
Tuesday's final round begins at 8:30 am.
