ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy rifle easily scored its season high with a score of 4659 to run away with the MAC Championship held at two different sites over the weekend. Navy shot at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range late last week, while Akron was at a different site and reported its score on Sunday. Navy topped the Zips, 4659 - 4509.
The win improves Navy's dual-meet record to 9-1 overall.
The story of the match was Navy's effort in both guns. The Mids totaled season highs in both disciplines, firing a 2316 in smallbore and a 2343 in air rifle. The smallbore score is the highest Navy smallbore score since the NCAA adopted a new scoring policy prior to the 2006-07 season. Navy's air rifle score of 2343 ranks among the top 10 all-time Navy air rifle scores.
The 4659 is the tops for the program since the NCAA's new scoring policy was integrated in 2006-07.
The result gives Navy its eighth straight MAC air rifle championship and its 11th smallbore title in the last 12 seasons.
Chris Burleson garnered medalist honors in smallbore with a 588, while Kenan Wang recorded a 579. Alison Lankes had a 578 and Kenan Wang totaled a 571.
Navy then turned it on in the air rifle discipline with its 2343. Ryan Williams led Navy with a 594, recording the third-highest air rifle score in school history, to garner medalist honors. Burleson added a 585, Allison Paulson scored a 583 and Wang scored a 581.
The score of 4659 would have placed second overall at last year's NCAA Championship.
Navy will compete in the 2011 NCAA Championships on March 11-12 in Columbus, Ga.
