Navy Women's Tennis Tops Colgate in Patriot League Opener

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team won two-of-three doubles matches to win the doubles point then claimed five-of-six singles matches to defeat Colgate, 6-1, in the Patriot League opener on Saturday at the Brigade Sports Complex. The victory improves Navy's record to 16-9 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League, while Colgate falls to 3-10 and 0-1, respectively.

Navy was impressive in the league opener, winning all five of its singles matches in straight sets while allowing just four games won by Colgate in the Mids' two doubles victories.

Emani Decquir (So. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Stefanie Ton (So. / Milpitas, Calif.) earned Navy's first doubles win with an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles. The Midshipmen then wrapped up the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles by Brittney Boucher (Sr. / San Antonio, Texas) and Erin Snook (Fr. / Tampa, Fla.).

Navy then received victories in singles play from Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, surrendering just 16 games in its five singles wins.

At No. 1 singles, Amanda Griffin (Sr. / Roseville, Calif.) picked up her 10th dual-meet win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 score. Ton added to the Navy lead at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Freshman Darien Sears (Silver Spring, Md.) earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles and Boucher won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to clinch the dual-meet victory for the Midshipmen.

For good measure, Erin Snook closed out the match with a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 5 singles to finish the Navy scoring in its 6-1 victory.

Sears and Snook both picked up their school-record 19th victory in the process.

Navy will host Bucknell on Sunday at 10:00 am at the Brigade Sports Complex. The Midshipmen and Bison were both picked second in the preseason Patriot League poll before the season began and Bucknell handed Navy two of its four losses a year ago, including a 4-1 decision in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.
