ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After opening the spring schedule last weekend with a 3-0 record at the George Washington Invitational, the Navy men's heavyweight rowing team will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to meet Cornell and Syracuse on Saturday. Saturday's first varsity race will be for the Goes Trophy, which is presented annually to the winner of the three-team regatta.
Fans can hear a live play-by-play of Saturday's races through the Syracuse Rowing Alumni Association here.
The Last Time Out
The varsity eight went 3-0 as it claimed the title at the George Washington Invitational. Navy's first boat defeated Georgetown and Holy Cross on day one, and then defeated Oxford by 11 seconds on day two to cap an undefeated weekend.
The Mids' second and third varsity crews, along with the first and second freshman crews, also went unbeaten in the two-day event.
Last Year vs. Cornell and Syracuse
Last year in Annapolis, Cornell captured its second consecutive Goes Trophy, crossing the finish line with a time of 5:59.1. The Big Red finished just 0.4 seconds in front of the runner-up Syracuse, who came in with a time of 5:59.5. Navy placed third, finishing with a time of 6:08.06.
Due to poor weather conditions at last year's race, all other competitions were cancelled.
About the Goes Trophy
The trophy, which is presented annually to the winner of the varsity race between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, is named for Clifford "Tip" Goes, who graduated from Syracuse in 1914. Goes created the trophy to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy.
Navy has captured the Goes Trophy 24 times, which is the most of either of the three programs.
Crew of the Week
By going 3-0 last weekend, Navy was voted "Crew of the Week" in an online poll at row2k.com this week. Navy received 41.8% of the 3,417 total votes, edging Grand Valley State's women's varsity eight boat to take the honor.
Quoting the Coach
Head coach Rick Clothier's take on this weekend's upcoming competition...
"This is a really interesting race - it has been an incredibly hard-fought regatta over the last 55 years. This year should be another close race, based on what the teams have done so far this season. We are still a pretty young crew with just one senior rower and a senior coxswain, so we're looking forward to it."
