ITHACA, N.Y. - The Navy men's heavyweight rowing team took third place in its annual race with Syracuse and Cornell on Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. Syracuse took home the Goes Trophy by winning the first varsity race with a time of 5:42.2, while Cornell just edged Navy for second place.
"We worked really hard and raced pretty well today," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "We would have liked to have done some things differently, but we had a solid and aggressive finish to get back in the race."
Navy led the initial 250 meters of the first varsity race, before Syracuse pulled in front for the remainder of the competition.
"We made a great sprint and nearly overtook Cornell in the last 500 meters," said Clothier.
Cornell finished with a time of 5:45.0, just 1.5 seconds ahead of Navy.
Navy's second varsity crew responded in the next race as it crossed the finish line first with a time of 5:48.7. Syracuse placed second with a 5:50.9 and Cornell took third with a 5:54.7.
In the third varsity race - the opening competition of the day - Cornell placed first with a time of 5:55.2. Syracuse and Navy followed in second and third place, respectively.
Navy's freshman crews posted solid rows as both claimed victories on Saturday. The Mids' first freshman boat clocked a time of 5:49.7, topping second-place Syracuse by five seconds.
In the second freshman race, Navy won by an even bigger margin as its time of 6:04.8 was nearly 19 seconds ahead of Cornell.
Navy and Syracuse tied for the Stagg Trophy, but Syracuse got the tie-breaker by virtue of its win in the first varsity race.
The Midshipmen will be back on the water next Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa., where they will meet Harvard and Penn.
