ROCKVILLE, Md. - Georgetown held the Navy baseball team to just five hits as it defeated the Midshipmen, 17-2, on Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field in Rockville, Md. The loss dropped Navy to 26-18-1 on the season as Georgetown improved to 20-23.
Georgetown's Tommy Isaacs, Alex Baker, Neal Dennison and Jared Cohen combined to limit the Mids to just one hit through seven innings.
"They beat us in every facet of the game," said Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "We play 50-plus games in baseball and we've got to get past this one and now look forward to this weekend. It was just one of those days and now it's time to move on."
Georgetown took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with the help of a two-RBI single by Paul Bello that found its way through the left side of the infield.
The Hoyas built on their lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs with two outs. Dan Godefroi reached on an error, which scored a run, and Andy Lentz followed with an RBI single to make the score 5-0.
Three RBI singles, an RBI double and a wild pitch extended the Hoya lead to 10-0 in the fourth inning.
Navy committed a total of five errors in the game, including three in the bottom of the seventh, which helped the Hoyas go up 14-0 before Andrew Hahn broke up the shutout bid with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth.
Greg Bryant hit a one-out single and Hahn followed in the next at-bat with his third home run of the season as his shot easily cleared the wall in right center field.
The Hoyas tacked on three more runs off four hits in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 17-2.
Starter Zach Sipe was one of six Navy pitchers that saw action on Wednesday and was charged with the loss.
Freshman Josh Elmore was the only Navy pitcher that did not give up a run as he surrendered just one hit in 2.2 innings and struck out three.
Isaacs, who started and went three complete innings, got the win.
The Midshipmen, which are currently tied for the top spot in the Patriot League, will host Lafayette in their final regular season series this weekend. The four-game set will begin on Saturday at 12 p.m. with a doubleheader.
