ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's cross country team placed second out of 10 teams at Saturday's Navy Invitational held on the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. The Midshipmen totaled 59 points to trail only event-winner Eastern Kentucky's tally of 45 points.
"It was a great day, with a great race against great intersectional rivals," said Navy head coach Al Cantello. "We will be all right as a team."
Navy was the lone school to place four of its runners among the top-12 finishers in the race. Leading the way for the Mids was Cody Rome (Sr., Eagle, Idaho), who placed fifth overall with a time of 24:32.32 over the 8,000-meter course. Ken Bunnell (Sr., St. John's, Vt.) followed in ninth place for Navy (24:40.65), with teammate James Pearson (Sr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) finishing one place and less than one second (24:41.43) in back of Bunnell. The fourth Mid to cross the finish line was Kyle Satterwhite (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) in 12th place (24:48.48). The fifth and final Mid to score on the day was Robert Patterson (So., Owings, Md.) in 23rd place (25:02.16).
Eastern Kentucky's Soufiane Bouchikhi won the race with an overall time of 24:16.79. That clocking gave him a six-second margin of victory over Louisville's Tyler Byrne.
Finishing in third place as a team was La Salle with 70 points, Louisville scored 78 points to place fourth and American tallied 129 points to place fifth.
Navy's season will continue on Sept. 24 when the Mids travel to Falcon Heights, Minn., to take part in the Griak Invitational.
