Women's Cross Country Wins Salty Seadog Invite

Sept. 17, 2011

Salty Dog Invite Results

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Members of the Navy women's cross country team accounted for five of the top-13 finishing runners to allow the squad to win the Salty Seadog Invite that was held Saturday morning on the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. The Mids posted a score of 43 points to win the 11-team race by 10 points over second-place La Salle.

"It was extremely exciting to have our runners as tightly packed against solid competition as they were," said Navy head coach Karen Boyle. "La Salle is ranked ahead of us in our region, so it was good to have them here and compete against them."

Brigid Byrne (Jr., Vienna, Va.) was Navy's top finishing runner over the 6,000-meter course. Her time of 22:17.01 was good enough for a fifth-place showing. Annie-Norah Beveridge (Fr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) was the ensuing Mid to finish as she placed seventh overall with a time of 22:21.73. Following immediately behind her was teammate Shannon Cuthbert (Fr., Orange Park, Fla.) in eighth place with a clocking of 22:25.32. The additional Navy runners to score points on the day were Katie Taylor (Sr., Salem, Ore.) with her 10th-place showing (22:38.51) and Christina Blair (Fr., Peninsula, Ohio), who placed 13th (22:51.06).

"With Jess Pacalio (Sr., Sun Valley, Nev.) out of today's race due to illness, we needed others to step up for us," said Boyle. "They packed well. Brigid had an awesome performance, while Annie-Norah and Shannon ran well together.

"Overall, to have five of the top-13 finishers against the competition we faced today is great. I'm proud of how we ran."

La Salle runners placed first and second in the race. Caitlin Storbeck won the race with a time of 22:04.67 to just edge teammate Meghan McGlinchey's time of 22:05.18.

There was a wide gap between the scores posted by the Mids and Explorers. Finishing in third place was Loyola with 125 points, Malone placed fourth with 130 points and Akron finished in fifth place with 132 points.

Navy's next race will be Sept. 30 when the Mids travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take part in the Paul Short Run.
