BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team allowed UMBC to go on significant runs in each set of a 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 victory by the Retrievers over the Midshipmen Tuesday night at the RAC Arena in Baltimore, Md.
The opening set was tied at 7-7 when UMBC (6-3) when on a 10-0 run to pull away from Navy (0-7) and win the first set.
The Mids shook off the results of the first set by quickly jumping out to 9-2 lead at the start of the second set. Navy still held a six-point lead at 12-6 when UMBC went on a 7-0 run to take the advantage at 13-12. The score would again be tied at 14-14 when the Retrievers scored the ensuing three points. The Mids would narrow the margin down to two points at both 17-15 and 18-16, but that was followed by UMBC again tallying the next three points to build a 21-16 cushion before going on to claim the second frame.
UMBC held just a slim lead over Navy in the early part of the third set. There was only a one-point difference between the teams (7-6) when the Retrievers scored 11 of the next 15 points to take an 18-10 advantage. The closest the Mids could narrow the deficit down to before UMBC ended the contest was six points at 19-13.
"We went back to doing some uncharacteristic things we didn't do this past weekend," said Navy head coach Larry Bock. "We may have been a little flat coming out of the weekend. Every time we did something to gain momentum, we found a way to hurt ourselves. Tonight was a combination of us not playing real well against a nice UMBC team. I may not have had them as well prepared in some ways as they could have been."
Navy finished the match with 17 more attacks than UMBC did (97-82), but the Mids tallied 10 fewer kills (41-31) and 10 more attack errors (20-10) than the Retrievers ended the night with. That led to UMBC outhitting Navy, .378-.113. The Mids also committed seven service errors without recording an ace while the Retrievers posted six aces against five service errors.
Navy's Carolyn Ewert (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) continued her strong play from this past weekend as she posted 13 kills and hit .360 for the match. Ranking second for the Mids in kills was Maida Kalic' (Sr., Vernon, N.Y.) with seven, while Alex Cassel (Fr., Sandy, Utah) posted a Navy-best four blocks in the match.
UMBC's Hannah Schmidt tallied 14 kills and just one attack error on 24 swings (.542).
Navy will remain on the road this weekend when it participates in the Hartford / Quinnipiac Invitational.
