ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A sweep of the three doubles matches followed by five straight-set singles victories gave the Navy men's tennis team a 6-1 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) Saturday morning at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The contest served as the season opening match for both squads.
Earning the first match victory of the year for the Mids was Navy's No. 2 doubles tandem of Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.), who won an 8-1 decision over the team of Sergio Carvajal and Chris Jimenez. The Mids then secured the doubles point when Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Anderson Walls (Jr., Alpharetta, Ga.) combined for an 8-3 win over Nathaniel Fleming and Andres Rosa at No. 1 doubles. Heyward Drayton (So., Valley Forge, Pa.) and Chris Kenney (So., Westlake Village, Calif.) closed out the doubles portion of the day by posting an 8-5 victory over the duo of Lawson Barter and Juan Andres Pardo at the No. 3 flight.
McDonald and Mark also were the first two singles players to finish their respective matches. McDonald did not drop a game in defeating Fleming at No. 2 singles, with Mark soon walking off the court following his posting a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jimenez at No. 3 singles. Clinching the overall match victory for the Mids was Daniel, who recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over Barter at No. 5 singles.
Rebersak made the team score 5-0 when he completed a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Carvajal at No. 1 singles, then Tyler Burnett's (Fr., Fayetteville Ga.) 6-2, 7-5 win over Rosa at the No. 4 flight gave Navy a 6-0 advantage in the team scoring. Navy's lone loss of the day came at No. 6 singles where Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) dropped a 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) contest to Pardo in the final match to be completed.
"We played okay today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Some of the guys were outstanding. Peter and Calvin played extremely well. Some of the other players were not sharp enough. I'm not pleased that we lost a match today. We have to be ready to go and better prepared for our matches next week."
Navy will return to the Tose Family Tennis Center next week for a pair of matches. The Mids will first face St. Joseph's in a Noon match on Jan. 28 before playing host to St. Francis (N.Y.) at 5 p.m.
