Rifle Takes First Dual Match of the Season

Oct. 13, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy rifle team fired a season-high score of 4623 to defeat University of the Sciences on Saturday morning at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range in Annapolis. The Midshipmen totaled a 2282 in smallbore and a season-high 2341 in air rifle. The Devils registered a 2192 in smallbore and a 2142 in air rifle for a total of 4334.

"Air rifle was exceptionally good today," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We got off to decent start in smallbore, but weren't able to hold it together all the way until the end. But, I'm not unhappy with it."

Navy had three shooters in air rifle with scores of 585 or above. Ryan Williams led all competitors with a 589 in the discipline, while Steven Frazier followed with a season-high 588 and Jodi Cull-Host produced a 585.

Zach Gibson (579) and Shawn Cleary (575) were Navy's other scorers in the event.

Frazier led the Mids in smallbore with a score of 578.

"Steven was good today, but he feels like he left points out there in smallbore," said Kelley.

Gibson improved his best smallbore score by four points as he fired a 570. Williams (568), Cull-Host (565) and Alex Berry (557) followed.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Oct. 27 when they travel to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers.
