Rifle Closes MAC Tournament on Top

Oct. 7, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy rifle team wrapped up the MAC Tournament on Sunday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range by posting a combined score of 4607 to take first place. Navy topped Akron, which fired a 4564, and VMI, which registered at 4149. Navy's total of 4607 was three points higher than its first-place score yesterday at the MAC Tournament.

"Any day you can improve on your score from the previous day - I can't argue with that," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "With our score being similar to yesterday, it shows we're consistent and what we're capable of. I think we're going to see some really fine performances this season."

Helping Navy to a total of 2290 in smallbore were Steven Frazier and Ryan Williams, who both scored a 579 to lead all competitors. Jodi Cull-Host fired a 568 and Brandon Thompson a 567. Sophomore Alex Berry, who battled illness all day, posted a 564.

Cull-Host was the top shooter in air rifle as her score of 587 was seven points higher than her total from yesterday. Williams was second with a 585 and Frazier followed with a 576. Freshmen Zach Gibson and Shawn Cleary completed Navy's scoring-five with totals of 569 and 567, respectively.

"Jodi and Ryan were in back and forth match in air rifle," said Kelley, whose team totaled a 2317 in the discipline. "It was exciting and they put up some pretty good scores."

Navy will look to continue its improvement next weekend when it takes on University of the Sciences in Annapolis on Saturday.
