ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's tennis team rallied past Longwood, 4-3, in Saturday's opener, then breezed past Coppin State, 7-0, in the nightcap to remain undefeated on the young season.

The Midshipmen improved to 7-0 on the season with their two victories on Saturday.

"We knew going in that the Longwood match would be tough. Longwood fought hard and we passed our biggest test of the season so far," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "To play without one of our regular starters and then to come back and win the match after losing the doubles point was huge."

Navy lost the doubles point for the first time all season when Longwood was victorious at Nos. 1 and 2. Navy's lone victory in doubles play came from Natalie Houle (Jr. / The Woodlands, Texas) and Caitlin Olsen (So. / Los Gatos, Calif.) at No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 victory.

Trailing 1-0, Navy tied the match at 1-1 when Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) won at No. 1 singles by a 6-0, 6-1 tally. Erin Snook (So. / Tampa, Fla.) gave Navy a 2-1 match lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Longwood tied the match at 2-2 at No. 2 singles when Malin Allgurin stopped Emani Decquir's (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) school-record nine-match winning streak.

Stefanie Ton (Jr. / Milpitas, Calif.) then gave Navy a 3-2 advantage at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Freshman Noelle Kaufmann (Westlake, Ohio) clinched the match for Navy at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph.

"We stepped up when it was needed as a team and individually. Noelle Kaufmann stepped in to clinch the match at No. 6 singles. She was sick for most of the week, practices just two days, then wins the deciding match," said Puryear. "I also thought that Erin, Darien and Stefanie all played really tough ball today and were critical to our comeback in singles. I am proud of the ladies, it was a great team win. All of them played the roles that were needed for the success of the team."

Navy then breezed past Coppin State in the nightcap, 7-0. The Mids allowed Coppin State to win just four games all day as the Mids easily improved to 7-0 overall.

"The Coppin match gave us a chance to show our depth and give other team members some match experience," said Puryear. "Coppin has improved from last year, but we were very, very efficient against them today."

Navy won the doubles point by winning matches at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, then winning by default at No. 3. Haley Adams (So. / Woodstock, Ga.) and Katie Laderer (Jr. / Norfolk, Va.) teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-0 victory and Carrie Laskey (Fr. / Fort Thomas, Ky.) and Julia Zook (So. / Seattle, Wash.) won by the same margin at No. 2 doubles.

Navy then received victories in singles play from Adams, Laderer, Michelle Yau (Fr. / Dacula, Ga.), Zook and Laskey to complete the sweep.

Navy will be in action next weekend when it hosts Seton Hall at 10:00 am on Saturday and Manhattan at noon on Sunday. Both matches are at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex in Annapolis.
