CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy sophomore attackman Sam Jones (Annapolis, Md.) picked up Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors on Monday after contributing five goals and four assists to Navy's 14-7 victory over VMI Saturday afternoon in Annapolis. In addition to Jones, Colgate's James Queeney (defense), Lehigh's Matt Poillon (goalkeeper) and Bucknell's David Dickson (rookie) were among those players recognized by the conference office as players of the week at their respective positions.
Jones is just the 10th different Navy player to garner a Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week citation since the Midshipmen joined the league in 2004. Midfielder Andy Warner was the last Mid to earn the award when he won the prized award last March following his eight-point explosion that led to a come-from-behind victory by Navy over Towson.
A year ago Jones kicked off his Navy career with a four-goal performance in the Mids' opener against VMI. Almost a year to the day later, Jones produced a career-best nine-point effort against the Keydets in Navy's 2012 opener, guiding the Midshipmen to their 11th-consecutive season-opening victory. While his goal, assist and point totals were all career highs, Jones' nine-point performance marked the most points by a Navy player since Dennis Nealon produced 12 points (4-8) against Washington College on March 20, 1991.
Jones, who pitched his fourth-collegiate hat trick and the 12th multi-point game (out of 14) of his career, scored his five goals on sevens shot, including six shots on goal. He also turned in five ground balls, the third most on the team, and caused a pair of turnovers.
Jones, who is riding a five-game scoring streak dating back to last year's Georgetown contest, will lead the Midshipmen back into action on Sunday when Navy faces Jacksonville in the second game of the Moe's Southwest Grill Classic played at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. NBC Sports Network will televise both games beginning with Denver and Ohio State at 2:00 pm, followed by the Mids and Dolphins at 4:00 pm. Additionally, Pete Medhurst will be on site to call the game from the opening whistle on WNAV 1430 AM/99.9 FM.
