Navy Tallies Pair of Men's Tennis Victories

Feb. 4, 2012

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team improved its record to 5-1 on the season by posting a pair of victories Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Midshipmen first recorded a 6-1 win over Villanova before defeating Howard by an identical score.

After winning each of the three doubles matches against Villanova (0-1), Navy recorded five straight set singles victories over the Wildcats. Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) placed Navy's second team point on the board with his 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Mark Miller. Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) would make the score 3-0 when he posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Matt Colonnese at No. 2 singles. Tyler Burnett (Fr., Fayetteville Ga.) then clinched the team win for the Mids with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Michael Rosengren at No. 4 singles.

Navy's additional two wins came courtesy of Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), who was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Thomas O'Brien at No. 1 singles, and Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.), who recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tim Abbracciamento at No. 6 singles.

Villanova's lone point of the day came when Ryan Peyton won a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) at No. 5 singles.

"I thought we played well," said Navy head coach John Officer of Navy's effort against Villanova. "We can play better. We struggled a little in doubles, but our freshen keep coming up strong. Villanova is a young team and we really just went out there and took care of business. It was a very workman-like effort.

"I was disappointed Blake lost his match as he was leading by the score of 5-2. His opponent just was able to put everything together at that point."

The Mids then won both of the two doubles matches they played against Howard, losing a combined eight games in the process, before winning four straight set singles matches against the Bison.

McDonald dropped just one game against Spencer Mitchell at No. 1 singles to win his fourth match of the day. Mark matched McDonald's victory total for the doubleheader thanks to his 6-2, 6-0 win over Eric Chavous at No. 2 singles. Daniel then balanced out his singles efforts on the day by winning a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Khyrie Alleyne at No. 4 singles.

Gutsche would pick up what would prove to be Navy's last point of the match when he tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win over Brandon Burns at No. 5 singles. In the last match to finish, Howard's Devard Wharton posted a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) win over Burnett at No. 3 singles.

"I thought 95 percent of the team played a highly motivated match tonight and really got after it," said Officer of the team's performance against Howard. "They played really well in both singles and doubles. Calvin was really hungry out there, Peter was highly motivated, Nick played extremely well and Blake did a nice job of coming back after losing his singles match earlier in the day.

"But it was disappointing to lose the match that we did. We need to have a complete effort from everyone on the team and not just most of the team. We are going to need a full team effort in our next match."

Navy will take to the road for its next match, a Friday contest at No. 17 North Carolina, before returning to the Tose Family Tennis Center for matches Feb. 12 against Drexel (noon) and Mount St. Mary's (5 p.m.).
