HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Navy men's tennis team began its 2012 Patriot League campaign by posting a 7-0 victory over Colgate Saturday afternoon at the Manlius Eastside Racquet Club in Hamilton, N.Y.
"We played very well today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We knew coming into today that Colgate was a very tough team we were going to be facing on the road and in a facility with very fast courts. We'll take the 7-0 win."
The doubles competition between the Midshipmen (12-6, 1-0 Patriot League) and the Raiders (7-6, 0-1) went down to the wire. Navy's No. 1 tandem of Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) quickly gave the Mids their first victory of the day when they recorded an 8-3 win over Colgate's team of Alec Goldstein and Parker Lewis. The Raiders evened the doubles results at one victory apiece when their No. 3 team of Bobby Berkowitz and Harry Jewett combined for a narrow 8-6 win over Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.).
Navy would earn the doubles point when Chris Kenney (So., Westlake Village, Calif.) and Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) converted on their third match point to defeat Luke Gensburg and Sean Spellberg, 9-7, at No. 2 doubles.
"Winning the doubles point was a huge piece of momentum for us," said Officer.
Navy would carry that momentum into the singles portion of the day as the Mids won all six of the singles matches, with four of those victories coming in straight sets.
McDonald placed Navy's second team point on the scoreboard when he posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Goldstein at No. 3 singles. Rebersak soon followed with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Gensburg at No. 1 singles, then Daniel secured the overall team win for Navy with his 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spellberg at No. 3 singles.
Mark would make the score 5-0 in favor of Navy after he completed a come from behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Berkowitz at No. 2 singles. Kenney would next win a 6-2, 6-2 decision over John Beam at No. 6 singles, with Gutsche holding on for a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3) win over Alan Pleat at No. 5 singles to close out the day.
"We played outstanding in singles," said Officer.
Navy will remain on the road Sunday for a noon match at Bucknell.
