Mids Top Bucknell in Patriot League Opener, 5-2

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Navy women's tennis team won five-of-six singles matches, four of them coming in straight sets, to rally past Bucknell, 5-2, in the Patriot League opener for both teams. Navy improved to 15-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, winning its fourth straight match. Bucknell fell to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in league play.

"This was a tough and hard-fought match. Bucknell did a great job and came out firing in doubles play," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "I thought we did a great job fighting back in singles play after losing the doubles point."

Navy won just one-of-three doubles matches, as Bucknell won close matches at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Dye Das (Jr. / Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Darien Sears (So. / Silver Spring, Md.) were victorious in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, 9-8 (2).

Navy, however as it has done in six of its previous 14 match victories, rallied in singles play.

Emani Decquir (Jr. / Sacramento, Calif.) knotted the match score at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Gabby Winter (Fr. / Orlando, Fla.), Noelle Kaufmann (Fr. / Westlake, Ohio) and Erin Snook (So. / Tampa, Fla.) then clinched the victory for Navy with wins at Nos. 5, 6 and 4 respectively.

Stefanie Ton (Jr. / Milpitas, Calif.) then clinched Navy's fifth point of the match with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles to complete Navy's 5-2 victory.

"All season long we have done a great job of finding ways to get the job done and today was no different," said Puryear.

Navy heads to Hamilton, N.Y., to face Colgate on Sunday.
