Mids Rally to Defeat Bison in Men's Tennis

March 25, 2012

Final Stats

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- After losing the doubles point and the first singles match to be completed, the Navy men's tennis team rallied to post a 4-3 victory over Bucknell Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Lewisburg, Pa. It is the second consecutive season in which the Midshipmen (13-6, 2-0 Patriot League) defeated the Bison (5-8, 0-1) by the score of 4-3.

"It was a struggle today," said Navy head coach John Officer, "but we are happy with the win. Anytime you can win on the road in this league is great."

The Bison quickly won the first two doubles matches to finish to earn the doubles point. Josh Katten and Evan Zimmer first recorded an 8-2 win over Chris Kenney and Marcus Rebersak at No. 2 doubles, then Scott Bernstein and Kelly Morque won an 8-4 decision over Blake Daniel and Nicholas Gutsche at No. 3 doubles.

The Bucknell lead increased to 2-0 when Gregory Maxson defeated Kenney by the score of 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Navy sliced the deficit in half thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 win by Peter McDonald at No. 3 singles over Octavio Canibe, then tied the score at 2-2 when Calvin Mark posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Zimmer at No. 2 singles.

Bucknell regained the lead as Katten tallied a 6-2, 7-5 win over Daniel at No. 4 singles, but a 6-3, 6-4 triumph by Rebersak over Gregg Cohenca at No. 1 singles evened the match again at 3-3.

The Mids would win the dual when Gutsche defeated Kyle Rosen by the score of 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

"We really came out fired up at the start of singles," said Officer. "We very much wanted to change the momentum around. Our energy level was much higher than it was in doubles."

Navy will play all of its remaining matches this season at home, starting Wednesday when the Mids play host to Richmond at 2:30 p.m.
