ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A late rally in singles by the Navy men's tennis team fell short as the Midshipmen dropped a 4-3 decision to Richmond Wednesday afternoon in Annapolis. Navy, now 13-7 on the year, has suffered four losses by the score of 4-3.
Richmond (8-7) won two of the three contested doubles matches to tally the first team point of the day. Ethan Dunbar and Paul Nahon III posted a narrow 8-6 win for the Spiders at No. 3 doubles over Navy's tandem of Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.). Navy evened the matches up at one apiece when Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded an 8-4 win for the Mids at No. 1 doubles over Sebastien Feder and Jesse Feder. That left the match at the No. 2 flight between Navy's Chris Kenney (So., Westlake Village, Calif.) and Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Richmond's team of Dylan Trent and Aaron Wicker to decide the doubles point.
Navy's duo built a 6-3 lead, but Richmond's team rallied and soon the set was headed into a tiebreaker. The Spiders would prevail in the tiebreaker by the score of 7-2 to give Richmond a key point.
"Doubles got away from us," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We should have won that."
Richmond would win the first set in five of the six singles matches, but the Mids were able to force a trio of third sets.
The first match to finish was at the No. 3 flight where Feder won a 6-3, 6-0 decision over McDonald. That was followed by Nahon defeating Gutsche by the score of 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, which gave Richmond a 3-0 advantage.
Tyler Burnett (Fr., Fayetteville Ga.) notched Navy's first point of the day with his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Trent at No. 6 singles. However, the Spiders would clinch the overall victory when Dunbar posted a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Rebersak at No. 1 singles.
The score would soon become 4-2 when Daniel rallied to win a 4-6, 7-6 (13-11), 1-0 (10-7) decision over Wicker at No. 4 singles, then Mark complete a comeback of his own with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Fauchet at No. 2 singles.
"I think we showed a lot of character today with how we fought back into the singles matches," said Officer. "We forced three three-set matches after having lost the first set and came away with wins in two of those matches. Being able to fight and put ourselves back into a position to win the match like that bodes well for us."
Navy will return to Patriot League play this weekend with matches Saturday against Lafayette (10 a.m.) and Sunday against Lehigh (2:30 p.m.). Both matches currently are scheduled to be played outdoors.
