NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion won four of the five singles matches contested on the day to post a 4-3 victory over the Navy men's tennis team Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.
Three of Navy's five losses this season have come by the score of 4-3, with an additional loss for the Mids coming to No. 17 North Carolina.
"This was a very tough match," said Navy head coach John Officer. "The guys played their hearts out."
Old Dominion (6-8) did not have a sixth player available, so the Monarchs defaulted matches to Navy (10-5) at both No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. That meant when Navy's No. 1 doubles team of Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) posted an 8-5 win over Wesley Barrett and Krzysztof Muzalewski, the Mids not only claimed the doubles point, they also took a 2-0 lead in the team scoring.
Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez Villa sliced the Navy lead in half when he tallied a 6-3, 6-0 win over McDonald at No. 2 singles. The Monarchs would tie the score at 2-2 when Can Cetinel won a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) at No. 5 singles, then took a 3-2 lead when Muzalewski, who is ranked 20th in singles in the ITA's Atlantic Region, recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win against Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) at No. 1 singles.
The score was tied at 3-3 after Navy's Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alfredo Rodriguez at No. 4 singles, which left the match at the No. 3 flight between Mark and Barrett to decide the outcome of the match.
The duo split the first two sets, with Barrett winning the opener in a tiebreaker (7-3) and Mark winning the second set by the score of 6-3 to force a third set. Mark would carry that momentum into the early part of the final set as he built leads a 3-0 and 4-1. However, he couldn't hold on to the cushion and Barrett rallied to post a 7-5 victory in the set to close out play on the day.
Old Dominion posted a 7-0 victory over Navy when the two teams met during the 2011 spring season.
"This was a much better showing than we had last year," said Officer. "I'm very proud of the effort we had out there. We displayed great team camaraderie all day."
Navy will next take to the courts on March 13 when it plays host to Morgan State.
