GRASONVILLE, Md. - Despite shooting its highest round of the 22-team, 54-hole Fireline Towson Invitational on Sunday afternoon, the Navy golf team tied for third with a three-round mark of 879 (+15). The Mids turned in a 9-over par 297 to slip just one spot in the final team standings.
Northern Colorado (288-294-289=871), who was tied with the Mids for second going into the final round, shot the low round of the day with a 1-over par 289 to tie Seton Hall (294-284-293=871) for the team title. Meanwhile, the Mids (294-288-297=879) finished alongside Penn State (294-293-292=879), who inched up from fourth with a 4-over par 292 in the final round. Rounding out the top five was Binghamton (300-294-289=883), who began the day in eighth place.
Loyola's Jay Mulieri took medalist honors, pacing the field with a 7-under par 209 which featured a 3-under par 69 in the final round. Although Northern Colorado's Steven Kupcho turned in the low round of the day with a 4-under par 68, he fell short of the title placing second with a 5-under par 211.
The Midshipmen were led by two players who placed among the top 10, including senior Peter Reilly (Merrimack, N.H.) who finished fourth with a 2-under par 214. (71-70-73) Reilly began the day in third place, but slipped a spot after turning in a 1-over par 73 in the final round. Meanwhile, sophomore Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) (73-69-75) finished the three-day tournament in a tie for seventh with a 1-over par 217. Selby was unable to match his spectacular second round of 69, instead turning in a respectable 3-over par 75.
Carding a 19th-place finish was team captain Tim Shield (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), who pushed up in the standings following his 1-over par 73 in Sunday's final 18 holes. Shield completed the tournament with a 5-over par 221 (74-74-73).
Tying for 55th place were senior Tyler Kuhn (Prospect, Ky.) and freshman August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.). Kuhn played the tournament as an individual where he turned in an 11-over par 227 (72-77-78), while Jonas recorded a 4-over par 76 in the final round to post a three-round mark of 227.
Rounding out the scoring for the Mids was sophomore David Hall (Huntersville, N.C.) who tied for 65th with a 13-over par 229 (76-77-76).
The Mids return to action the weekend of April 14-15 when they travel to North Carolina to take part in the NC State Wolfpack Open.
