Lindy's College Football Magazine ranks Navy 80th out of 124 teams in their preseason rankings. The Mids were ranked higher than 10 of the 12 opponents on the 2012 schedule. Only Penn State (27th) and Notre Dame (33rd) were ranked higher than Navy.

The rest of Navy's 2012 opponents were ranked as follows: Air Force (86th), Indiana (87th), San Jose State (92nd), Troy (98th), Army (105th), East Carolina (108th), Florida Atlantic (113th), Central Michigan (117th) and Texas State (122nd).

Navy's Sept. 1 season opener against Notre Dame at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland was ranked as the 10th best non-conference game on the 2012 college football slate.
