HAMILTON, N.Y. - Sophomore Annie-Norah Beveridge (Ann Arbor, Mich.) won the Harry Lang Invitational on Saturday and helped the Navy women's cross country team to a third-place finish with 67 points. No. 9 Syracuse won the team title with 24 points to top the 11-team field and Bucknell was second at 60.
Beveridge led for the entire 4,200-meter race and posted a blistering time of 15:51, the second-fastest time ever ran on the Colgate women's cross country course. Beveridge place first out of 104 runners and won by 11 seconds.
"We had a great opener and everybody ran well," head coach Karen Boyle said. "We wanted to be aggressive off the start today because the course gets narrow. Annie-Norah was aggressive from the beginning and led the whole way. We basically had all freshmen and sophomores out there today and we were happy with how we matched up with our front girls."
Beveridge was the medalist for the first time in her cross country career. She was the 2011 Patriot League Rookie of the Meet after helping Navy to a team title by placing 10th at the league championship.
Sophomore Christina Blair (Peninsula, Ohio) was Navy's second finisher on the day, taking sixth place with a time of 16:13. Freshman Autumn Greba (North Huntington, Pa.) placed 11th at 16:41.
Navy's next finishers all crossed the line in a pack. Sophomore Shannon Cuthbert (Orange Park, Fla.) was 24th at 17:01 and freshmen Amanda Mulkey (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Ashley Welker (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed 25th and 26th, respectively, at 17:04.
The Mids will next compete at the Harry Groves Invitational next Saturday. Penn State is hosting the meet at the same course where the 2012 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship will be held in November.
