Navy Sweeps Swimming & Diving Meet from UMBC

Oct. 18, 2013

Final Stats

CATONSVILLE, Md. - The Navy swimming and diving teams successfully opened their 2013-14 seasons by sweeping a dual meet from UMBC Friday evening. The Mids recorded wins in half of the 16 events to win the women's meet by the score of 163-137, with Navy winning just seven events in a 154.5-145.5 victory in the men's meet.

Lauren Baguley (Sr., Hudsonville, Mich.) and Rachael Dudley (So., Hoschton, Ga.) each won a pair of events for the Navy women's squad. Baguley picked up victories in both backstroke races (58.72 and 2:06.28), while Dudley swept the butterfly events (58.61 and 2:08.40).

Also earning victories during the meet for the Mids were Sam Brennan (Jr., Stillwell, Kan.) in the 1000 freestyle (10:40.13), Colleen Randolph (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.82), Morgan Nassif (So., Laguna Hills, Calif.) in the 500 free (5:11.84) and Julie Jesse (So., Edwardsburg, Mich.) on the one-meter springboard (226.35).

Key events for the Mids were the 1000 free in which Brennan led a 1-2-3 Navy finish, as well as the 100 back, 200 fly and 200 back where Navy swimmers placed both first and second.

"It was great to see the divers provide the support they did tonight," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "Our distance crew also came through for us, as did our backstrokers.

"It was nice to finally get up and race. It was a good result for us to begin the year with, but we have a lot of work to do before our meet next week."

The Navy men's team also saw two of its swimmers win a pair of events. Earning the double wins were Tom Duvall (So., Durham, N.H.) and Jonathan DeBaugh (So., Conroe, Texas). Duvall's two victories came in the 1000 free (9:34.71) and 500 free (4:42.45) events, with DeBaugh claiming the two butterfly races (50.63 and 1:52.99).

Winning the remaining three races for Navy were Marlin Brutkiewicz (Fr., Mobile, Ala.), 100 breaststroke (57.20); Luke Hoffer (Sr., Chapel Hill, N.C.), 200 breaststroke (2:05.85); and Wil Mayo (Sr., The Woodlands, Texas), one-meter diving (279.97).

Sparking the Mids to their victory was their placing first, second and third in race Nos. 11 and 12, the 200 breaststroke and the 500 freestyle.

"I was really impressed with the way we battled back tonight against a good UMBC team that deserves a lot of credit for how well they performed," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "We were down at least 20 points late and were running out of events to make that up in. It was a real team effort for us to get back into the meet, let alone win it. The 200 breaststroke was the turning point. Not just finishing with the top-three placings, but the way the swimmers did it was big for us.

"We are excited to get back in the pool and get to work on a few things out of this meet and get ready for next week.

Both Navy teams will open the home portion of the season Friday when the Mids play host to Virginia in Lejeune Hall. The meet, which also features Yale's women's team, begins at 3 p.m.
