Sept. 23, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy junior defenseman Joseph Greenspan (Westfield, N.J.) has been tabbed as the Patriot League Brine Defensive Player of the Week, for the week ending September 22, the league office announced Monday.
Greenspan played the full 192 minutes in a pair of games last week as Navy downed George Washington, 3-0, and took No. 21 UMBC into double overtime before falling, 3-2.
Greenspan scored a goal in the second half against George Washington, burying a header off a set piece. Greenspan was also strong on the defensive end against the Colonials, helping to limit the team to three shots on goal as Navy earned its first shutout of the season.
Greenspan's goal against George Washington was his second of the season. He converted a penalty kick against St. Francis Brooklyn on September 5.
Greenspan also had a strong defensive effort against UMBC, breaking up a number of opportunities. He also helped keep the nation's leading scorer, Pete Caringi, without a goal.
This is the third different Patriot League weekly honor that Greenspan has won in his career. Greenspan began his playing career at Navy as a forward, but moved to the center back position prior to the 2013 season.
In 2011, Greenspan was named the league's rookie of the week on October 31 after scoring back-to-back goals in wins over American and Howard.
Last fall, Greenspan was named the offensive player of the week on September 24 after scoring a hat trick in a 4-2 win over eventual Patriot League Champion Lafayette.
Greenspan is Navy's active leader in career points (28) and goals (12).
Navy (2-3-2) is at Virginia Tech (3-1-2) on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.com.
