ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Sophomore Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and senior August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) both turned in top 20 performances en route to leading the Navy men's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the 54-hole Maryland Terrapin Invitational played at the Woodmont Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The 12-team field was in the midst of the second round on Monday when play had to be suspended due to darkness. Navy shot an opening-round 12-over par 300 to find itself in the middle of the pack before pushing up to fourth on Tuesday morning when the second round concluded. The Mids shot a 6-over par 294 over the second 18 holes of play with both Tallman and Jonas improving upon their first-round scores. Navy, however, struggled over the final 18, as the Mids posted a 20-over par 308 in final round to slide into a tie with Rutgers (304-290-308) for sixth.
Maryland, meanwhile, secured the team victory by way of its second-round 4-under par 284. Although the Terrapins were in second following the first round to neighboring Loyola, they put together the low round of the tournament in the second round and were able to stay the pace with the Greyhounds in the final round to take the team title with a 4-over par 868. Loyola finished five strokes back with a 9-over par 873 (287-292-294), followed by Elon (889, +25), Boston College (890, +26) and James Madison (892, +28) rounding out the top five.
George Mason's Kyle Hart and Elon's Jonathan Dilanni tied for medalist honors with a 2-under par 214. Hart held the early lead with a 4-under par 68 in the opening round, but Dilanni was able to make up part of the distance in the second round when Hart posted a 2-over 74.
Tallman paced the Midshipmen with a 6-over par 222 to place 16th. He was 2-over after the opening 18 holes before shooting par in the second round. However, Tallman slipped in the final standings with a 4-over par 76 in the final round. Jonas, the Mids' team captain, had a tough start, shooting a 5-over par 77, but rebounded nicely. Jonas posted back-to-back rounds of 73 and 74, respectively, to finished tied for 20th with a 224 (+8).
Senior Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) finished 37th with a 13-over par 229 (77-75-77), followed by freshman Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) in 46th (72-79-81=232) and sophomore Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) in 50th (77-74-83=234).
The Midshipmen will close out the fall season next week (Oct. 20-21) when they compete in the Georgetown Intercollegiate played at the Members Club at Four Streams in Bealsville, Md.
