Oct. 15, 2014 ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Coming off two strong showings at the Intercollegiate Doubles Warm-Up and the Maryland State Doubles Championship, Navy's Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) and Josh Hughes (Malvern, Pa.) looked to be the favorites entering last weekend's Intercollegiate Doubles Squash Championship in Philadelphia. However, the talented Rochester tandem of Neil Cordell and Mario Yanez managed to upset two Navy squads en route to taking the title.
Cordell and Yanez upset the top-seeded Navy duo of McGuinness, a senior, and Hughes, a freshman, in the quarterfinals, 3-2 (6-15, 15-8, 12-15, 15-14, 15-10). McGuinness, who paired up with 2014 graduate Hunter Beck to win last year's Intercollegiate Doubles Championship, and Hughes had a match ball in the fourth game, but were unable to secure the win and fell to the eventual champions in five games.
Meanwhile, Navy sophomore Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and rookie Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) upset the third-seeded team of Rahil Fazelbhoy and George Lemmon from Penn in five games (15-10, 15-13, 11-15, 12-15, 15-9) to advance to the semifinals where they would meet their teammates, brothers Jim and Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.). It was a back-and-forth affair, but the Brothers Kacergis would outlast Beck and Herold in five games, including a 15-14 win in the fifth game to secure the match victory.
The Kacergis brothers advanced to the finals for the second consecutive year, this time meeting Cordell and Yanez, but it would not be Navy's day as the Rochester tandem earned the crown by way of a 3-1 win (15-10, 10-15, 15-7, 15-11).
The Midshipmen will hold the annual Barb Tournament beginning next Monday. The week-long tournament pits Navy's players against one another in a round robin competition which then sets up an elimination tournament. The tournament results determine Navy's starting lineup to begin the season which is slated to officially kick off Nov. 7 at home against Bard (4:30 pm) and Fordham (7:00 pm).
