CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Three members of the Navy men's tennis team advanced to the second round in singles, along with one of Navy's doubles teams, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic Region Championship held this weekend in Charlottesville, Va.
Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) posted a straight-set win over Renier Moolman of St. Joseph's in the first round before falling in three close sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to Javier Maestre of Old Dominion, who was seeded in the Nos. 17-32 range at the event.
Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) tallied a 6-3, 6-0, win over Temple's Nicolas Paulus in the round of 128 to advance on to the round of 64. He would fall by an identical score in his second round match against Virginia's Mac Stylsinger, who is ranked 74th nationally.
Also recording a victory at the championship was Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.). He lost just three games in defeating Liberty's Jorge Azuero in the first round before falling, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to Cahit Kapukrian of George Washington in the second round.
Daniel and Pecor also teamed up for a doubles victory in the first round of the event. The duo posted an 8-2 victory over the William & Mary tandem of Lars de Boer and Scott Huang in the opening round of 64. The invite's No. 7 seed, UMBC's Alex Drean and Daniel Gray, would defeat the Navy pairing by the score of 8-5 in the second round.
"The players closed out the fall tournament season against some great competition within the region," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Moving into the off-season it will be interesting to see what direction the team decides to go as they will be on their own for most of the next three months. I am hopeful they will be working towards making our program competitive."
The ITA Atlantic Region Championship concludes the fall portion of Navy's schedule. The Mids will begin their dual meet slate of matches Jan. 17 when they play host to Saint Francis (Pa.).
