REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - The Navy women's golf team placed eighth of 10 teams at the 54-hole Delaware Invitational this weekend at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Navy posted an overall score of 986 (333-323-330; +122).

"We finished eighth but we were only a few shots out of being sixth," said head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. "We struggled a little bit with reading the greens. It was a tricky course but a great challenge. I was disappointed that we didn't finish the fall season on a better note, but it was still a good semester for us. I am pleased with where we are overall and we will now evaluate, move on and get ready for the spring."

Georgetown carded a 922 (311-299-312; +58) to win the team title and was followed by Penn (927), host Delaware (941), Towson (956), Richmond (971), Long Island (977), Central Connecticut (981), Navy (986), Delaware "B" (991) and Delaware State (1031).

Penn's Amanda Chin and Delaware's Amanda Terzian tied for first place by each shooting 227 (+11) and then Chin claimed medalist honors after winning a sudden-death playoff on the first hole.

Navy rebounded from an opening round of 333 on Saturday morning to shoot 10 strokes lower with a 323 on Saturday afternoon. Navy's 323 was the sixth-best team score of the second round. The Mids then carded a 330 in the third round on Sunday to move past Delaware's "B" team for sole possession of eighth place.

Freshman Kellyanne Hurst had a breakout performance to lead all Navy players with a 243 (86-79-78; +27) to tie for 21st place. After shooting an 86 on Saturday morning, Hurst rebounded with a 7-over par 79 in the second round and closed with a 6-over par 78 on Sunday. Hurst is the sixth different Mid to break 80 this season. Hurst entered the weekend with a season average of 92.4 and a season-low round of 88 and greatly improved on both numbers.

"Kellyanne played great this weekend," said Ste-Marie.

Freshman Emily Laskin finished two strokes behind Hurst at 245 (81-81-83; +29) to tie for 26th place. Laskin has Navy's lowest average this fall and she continued her consistent play with three rounds of 81-81-83.

Navy's third-highest finisher was freshman Legare Augenstein, who placed in a tie for 34th with a 250 (83-81-86; +34) and freshman Christine Walker was one stroke back with a 251 (83-84-84; +35) to place 37th.

Navy freshman Jane Moon, who was competing as an individual, tied for 44th with a 257 (85-89-83; +41) and junior Renata Bucher was 48th with a 259 (92-82-85; +43).

"I am pleased and proud of our young group of Midshipmen," said Ste-Marie. "We set a new team-low score of 315 this fall and I know we are capable of breaking that in the spring. We have a great group and our talent is deep with six players shooting rounds in the 70s in competition."

Navy has concluded its fall tournament schedule and will open its spring schedule in a little over four months at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic on Kiawah Island, S.C. from March 1-3.
