Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Navy women's tennis team won 11 singles matches and four doubles matches against a very competitive field at the Wake Forest Invitational this weekend.

"It was a good tournament," said head coach Keith Puryear. "It was the toughest event that we will face outside the ITA Regional tournament this fall. There were no easy outs and we lost some tight ones and we are still adjusting to the no-ad scoring.

"I thought we competed well and our improvement this fall has been evident. As always there are things we can work on and some fine-tuning to do, but overall I am pleased with where we are right now, but we need to continue to work hard and grind away."

Junior Sam Droop fell to one of Wake Forest's top players, Kimmy Guerin in the first round of the A singles flight, 6-0, 6-1, but then won a pair of three-set battles in the consolation round. Droop defeated UNC-Greensboro's Soumeya Anane in her first consolation match, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 and then defeated Davidson's Elaina Cummer, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

Freshman Amanda Keller lost her first round match in the C singles flight, but then won one consolation match and one additional match over Old Dominion's Faith Atiso from the D flight, 6-2, 6-0. Keller defeated USC Upstate's Anna Zoske, 6-2, 6-0, in the consolation round and was also credited with a walkover win.

Both freshman Claudia Mackenzie and junior Mikaela Carlson won their first round singles matches in the E singles flight. Mackenzie beat Appalachian State's Melissa Machado, 6-4, 6-4 and Carlson knocked off Davidson's Cassidy Shell, 6-2, 6-1.

Summer Ralston won a pair of singles matches in the round-robin H flight. Ralston defeated West Virginia State's Christine Johnson, 6-4, 6-1 and also defeated North Carolina A&T's Kayla Jefferson, 6-1, 6-1.

Rozel Hernandez and Audrey Channell reached the finals of the D doubles bracket with a 2-1 record. The duo won a pair of matches over teams from North Carolina A&T and Appalachian State before falling in the final to Davidson's Courtney McCray and Ally Sexton, 8-7 (9-7), in the D final.

Navy will return to Annapolis to host the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational next Friday through Sunday at the Brigade Sports Complex.
