Oct. 4, 2014 LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Navy water polo team was defeated by Bucknell on Saturday night as the Mids were unable to complete its regular season series sweep of the Bison. Bucknell led wire-to-wire at home on its way to an eventual 12-8 win.
"This was not a game that showed the progress made during the California trip," said Navy head coach Mladen Stanicic. "We made too many errors to overcome and the final result showed that."
The host Bison got out to a quick 2-0 lead as they found the back of the net twice over a 52-second period between 6:25 and 5:33. A Carl Dowzicky (Jr., Collegeville, Pa.) goal tightened the game to a 2-1 margin with 59 seconds left in the first quarter. Two late goals at 0:27 and 0:01 gave Bucknell at 4-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Bison held a three-goal lead into halftime as each team netted two goals in the second quarter. Following a Bucknell goal that made it 5-1, Navy went back-to-back on the scoreboard with tallies from Will Weggeland (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) and Robert Sutherland (Jr., Denton, Texas). Once again Bucknell scored on its final possession of a period with a goal at 0:30.
The Mids took a goal off the Bison's lead during play in the third quarter as they notched three scores. Thomas Patterson (Sr., Orange, Calif.), Carpenter Warren (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) and Matt Skowronski (Fr., Oak Hill, Va.) all recorded goals for the Mids in the period.
With the score 8-6 in favor of Bucknell coming out for the fourth quarter, Navy cut its deficit down to one at the 6:29 mark as Steven Emde (Jr., Ballwin, Mo.) scored in his first game back from injury. The Bison closed out the game on a 4-1 run over the final 5:18 to secure the victory. David Huber (So., Fort Washington, Pa.) notched the Mids' last score.
In goal, Joseph Rodgers (Jr., Coronado, Calif.) made a career-high eight saves in a relief appearance of Garrett Sabesky (Jr., Lakeside, Calif.).
The Mids will close out their weekend slate of games with a contest at Princeton on Sunday at noon.
